Faith fights crime: A mighty power

Police chaplains and others will use prayer

to heal troubled city streets

Chaplains, others to use faith in effort to fight crime

OPD Senior Chaplain Andrew Wade - “We can pray. We can call on people of faith to do the same. We believe that is a mighty power”…”There is a fight in the supernatural that is affecting us here in the physical world”…” This is a clarion call to people of faith. Let us join together. Let’s ask God to change the hearts and minds of men.”  “The good people are afraid, but it should be the other way around. The criminals are the ones who should be walking in fear.”

Maureen Bravo – IPNCF (Intercessory Prayer Network of Central Florida) - “Through prayer, you become a co-laborer with God, then you have to go out and do the hard work. It’s easy to sit on your duff and watch TV and do nothing while Rome is burning, but why not go out and try to save it?”

He asked the mourners to sing,: ‘I’m gonna stay on the battlefield till I die’.”

Drop in Murders Perplexes Police

They can’t explain the lull in Orange, Orlando killings.

Orlando area murders drop; police wonder why

October and November combined have seen fewer killings than any month in 2006” (or 2007)…Homicide detectives are as confused as anyone about the lull. The slow pace of killing might herald a major change in criminal behavior or be proof that months of crime crackdowns have worked. It could also be dumb luck. No cause is clear and no one wants to jinx the string of good fortune.”

“Since October,” (during the time of the first 40 day “prayer siege”), “the Orlando Police Department has been engaged in Operation Delta, a program to decrease criminal activity, street level drug trade and the violence that accompanies it.” During that time, OPD officers made over 230 arrests, many of drug dealers, in Parramore. At the same time, Orange County Deputies made more than 5,600 arrests along Orange Blossom Trail and in the Pine Hills area.” (both high crime areas.)

A new chief

Our position: Orlando’s Val Demings has tough task

but is up to the challenge

“..a private research group ranks Orlando the nation’s 11th-most-dangerous city…the city has made good strides recently with Operation Delta, a program that targets violent criminals and drug dealers in the Parramore neighborhood…Police have made 721 arrests there since October … no murders have occurred in Parramore since the operation began….the 24 member task force will move to other high crime areas of the city once there is significant improvement in Parramore…the strategy makes sense…keep arresting criminals until you clean up the area… Demings also is trying more innovative solutions, such as reaching out to local pastors in hopes that they will help ease tensions between inner city residents and the police.”

DROP IN MURDERS

Martha Van Duyne – “I read the article on Saturday’s front page titled: “Drop in Murders Perplexes Police

They can’t explain the lull in Orange, Orlando killings”… the writer wrote that “homicide detectives are as confused as anyone about the lull” and “no cause is clearAlso included were those words, “October and November combined have seen fewer killings than any month in 2006”.  It’s interesting that those were the exact two months that the OPD chaplain’s program “Operation Armor All” was taking place. For 40 days, hundreds of concerned citizens from churches all over Orange County participated by meeting in various groups downtown near Parramore Avenue praying for Orlando. ..for God’s true peace to replace the violence…for His healing and delivering power to bring permanent change to hurting individuals. …Let’s offer Him our thanks! And let’s keep praying!”

CITY’S NEW TOP GUN

Val Demings takes over as Orlando’s police chief Monday

“Demings is taking over the 1,000 member OPD at a critical juncture in its history.”

“During the past 2 ½ months… supervising a 330-member patrol division, Demings has overseen Operation Delta, a continuing drug and crime sweep aimed at reducing street violence in Parramore. More than 700 arrests have been made and slayings have slowed.”

“More than anything she understands that police alone can not stop crime. Her goal is to enlist an army of volunteers – from citizens, civic organizations, businesses and churches – to help mentor kids, join neighborhood watch groups and work with officers.”

A Call To Prayer and Fasting

December 12, 2007

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

It is with great humility, and sincerity of heart, that I write to ask that you consider the following invitation.  I am writing to you in partnership with Andrew T. Wade, Senior Chaplain, Orlando Police Department, and Maureen Bravo, of the Intercessory Prayer Network of Central Florida.

As you know, there was an unprecedented spike in violent crime in our Central Florida in 2007.  This has resulted in about 70 churches, and various community leaders coming together in prayer for our community.

During the month of January 2008, we would like to take that one step further.  We are asking that you join us in fasting and prayer for peace and safety in our community during the month of January.

Throughout history, our spiritual leaders resorted to prayer and fasting during times of trouble and turmoil.  We believe that we face just such a time right now.  We believe that the grip of crime on our community can only be broken by prayer and fasting

What type of fast are we talking about?  There are many options.

We are challenging some of you to join us in an absolute fast from all food during the month of January 2008.   Some will consider fasting for a day, or maybe a couple of days.  Still others may consider fasting from one meal a day, or one meal a week.

Regardless of the nature of the fast, the goal is to humble ourselves before God and seek his intervention throughout the communities of Central Florida.

There will be prayer walks throughout the month of January in order to support each other, and pray for our community.  We will be in touch with details concerning the prayer walks.

You can email me at mnation@nationlaw.com for updates and further information concerning this fast.  Senior Chaplain Wade can be reached athomaswade@bellsouth.net.  Maureen Bravo can be reached at IPNCF@ruii.org

We are setting up a link on the www.visionorlando.org  website where you can sign up and get more information.

God bless you.

Kindest regards,

Mark A. Nation
